HEREFORDSHIRE’S orchards have looked spectacular this year with the blossom from the apple, pear and cherry trees looking as wonderful as ever.

Next year something special will be happening in the orchards to mark their beauty and to honour the man who helped develop many of the varieties that provide such splendour and in turn the fruit that we eat today.

His name is Thomas Andrew Knight, who was born at Wormsley Grange, later to live at Downton Castle and become a world-famous 18th century horticulturist.

He was responsible for the ground-breaking work, Pomona Herefordiensis, the first colour illustrated pomona or ‘book of the apple’ in the world. Next year is the 200th anniversary of its publication and Herefordshire Council has decided to celebrate with Year in the Orchard 2011.
