Leominster’S Playhouse Company and Cinema are getting into the festival spirit with two fringe events.

Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling is the latest play to be staged by the Playhouse Company, and can be seen tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday at 7.30pm at the Community Centre in School Road A small, close-knit group of wealthy women friends, whose meeting place is Truvy’s Beauty Salon, are looking forward to Shelby’s wedding.

They include M’Lynn, director of a centre for people with mental problems, Shelby, who has to cope with her mother, diabetes and the desire for a baby, a mysterious new ‘hair stylist’ with a past, super-rich Clairee with her odd sense of humour, bitter and bad-tempered Ousier with a heart of gold and more money than God, and Truvy, who lives in a world of romance, hairspray and other people’s lives.

The scene is set for a sharp, funny and tragic story with a tear-jerking end.

On Thursday, June 10, the Playhouse Cinema presents Andy Serkis as Ian Dury in Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, a film that captures Dury’s chaotic way of life and his eclectic array of influences.
