Hereford Municipal Golf Club will host their first ever representative match when the Herefordshire county team take on Worcestershire Colts at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Captained by John McQuillan, the county will be fielding a strong team against the emerging talent from Worcestershire, and are looking to improve on their first outing of the season when they went down 13-5 to a very talented Shropshire & Herefordshire Junior Team at Kington.

Because of a clash with a Welsh Order of Merit event and unavailability, the under-strength Herefordshire team went down 6-0 in the morning foursomes but rallied well to collect five wins in the afternoon singles.

n There was a battle royale for the Scratch Trophy when Ross-on-Wye held their Spring Scratch and Handicap Trophies, the first major event of the year.

Club A team captain James Morgan, Paul Meek and Brian McNamara were locked together until Morgan chipped in for a birdie at the final hole to take the trophy with a gross 73, Meek and McNamara finishing a shot adrift as joint runners-up.

However, six-handicapper Meek had the consolation of winning the Handicap Trophy.

Club captain Doug Duncanson steered his team into the second round of the Gloucestershire Union County Seniors Scratch Foursomes Salver with a 3-0 victory at Rodway Hill.

Brian McNamara and Malcolm Sosna gave them a flying start with a scintillating eight and seven win in the top match, and the pairings of Gwynne Morgan and Patrick Gamble and Duncanson and Alex Aldridge-Blake completed a fine victory with five and four and four and three wins respectively.

Other results: Ross B beat Forest of Dean 5-1at home, Ross C lost 4-2 at Painswick, and Ross Seniors lost 5-2 at Herefordshire GC.

n Mark Bloxham and John Lewthwaite won the Times Trophy at Herefordshire GC with some consistent play over two days.

The trophy, originally presented by the Hereford Times, is run as a Canada Cup format. It is a pairs competition played over two days in which the partners cannot play together, with their nett scores added together to determine the winners.

Ross Adams led the qualifiers (for handicaps of 10 plus) for the Shrewsbury Chronicle Cup when he posted a fine nett 64 in the club qualifying event.

Forty stableford points was a popular score in the May Senior Stableford with Cec Morgan taking the honours in category one on a card countback from Roy Allen, and Graham Rees winning Category 2, all three registering 40 points.

n Junior member James Pritchard followed up his win in Belmont's Winter League final with a second success in the Stableford Cup, their first major event of the new season.

He carded 41 points to edge Andrew Main into second place by a point, with former captain Elwyn Hamer taking third spot with 37.

n Adrian Lunt continued his recent good form with a resounding win in Burghill Valley's May Senior medal, finishing no fewer than six shots clear of his nearest challenger in division one.

n Kington's Shropshire & Herefordshire junior captain Matthew Davies teamed up with club colleague Dan Jarman to claim third place in the twin counties' Jeffrey Clee Salver at Ludlow.

Playing in a foursomes format, they posted a morning round of 71 and followed this up with a fine 67 in the afternoon for a total of 138.

But they could not match the exceptional play of county champion Andrew Stephenson (Wrekin) and his partner Duncan Harris (Shrewsbury), who produced two rounds of 67 for a six-under winning score of 134.

Kington junior captain Nick Crum underlined his potential when he teamed up with Sid Price to win the Ravenhill Cup.

They posted a superb better-ball score of nett 59, three better than runners-up Mike Dyer and Terry Inskip, with Gareth Williams and Doug Taylor a further shot adrift in third place.

Dyer maintained his form and gained some consolation when he won the May medal with a fine nett 64.

n Gerald Bailey bagged a hole-in-one on the short 13th hole at Sapey to earn a double share of the two's sweep, but his 40 points was only good enough for second spot in the May stableford which was won by Jeremy Holt with an impressive 42.

n Leominster suffered another defeat to Bridgnorth in the second leg of their Herefordshire & Shropshire League match when they went down 4-2.

n Kingstone High School Society got their summer season underway with a nine-hole medal at Brampton, with the Kennedy family carrying off two prizes.

Year-nine pupil Ben took the overall award with a nett 21, and his mother Denise claimed the ladies' prize with a nett 30.
