A £500,000 transformation is planned for a Hereford outdoor activities centre if the money can be found.

Plans have been unveiled for the Dinedor Centre, which include demolishing the existing accommodation block and replacing it with state-of-the-art environmental buildings.

A recent investment of £20,000 in a new toilet and shower block will only be a small beginning if the ambitious scheme for the centre's expansion goes ahead.

The Herefordshire Outdoor Trust, which took over the site two years ago, has appointed a centre manager to lead the initiative and help generate the funding.

"It is a huge challenge but I am up for this and want to help create a facility that is attractive to corporate groups as well as youth and voluntary groups," said 27-year-old Adam Godwin, who has taken on the job of manager.

The existing facility has indoor accommodation for more than 20 people and can take up to 50 campers but the centre will be brought into the 21st century if the plans are brought to fruition.

"We have to spend some money on the existing building or it will fall down," he said in a candid interview.

Adam, who comes from Herefordshire, has worked for outdoor centre projects in France, Wales and Shropshire. He is a Scout leader in the county and is working with local youngsters to smarten up the current facilities.

"Raising the money to fulfil our plans will be a big task and I will be applying to the National Lottery and other funding sources but we will also be trying to raise some money locally," he added.

"I am working on a range of activities with the objective of raising awareness of Dinedor and all it has to offer."

A bid to give the centre a new identity includes a logo design competition with the the winner announced next month.
