A PROPOSAL to fell the silver birch tree near the entrance to the Memorial Hall car park is being opposed.
Newent town councillors Barry Wellington and Bill Offord said they were against the suggestion, which was made by Coun David Blick, when it was briefly discussed at the council meeting on Monday.
The tree was planted to mark the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977.
The council was told that felling the tree would make it easier to erect the stage for the Onion Fayre but no decision has been taken.
