PUPILS, staff and governors from a Kington school gathered in the town's church to celebrate and remember their founder.

The service at St Mary's Church is held annually when thanks are given for Lady Margaret Hawkins who founded Lady Hawkins School.

At the service, guest preacher the Rev Julie Read gave a sermon on global citizenship - a topic the school had been looking at when they had a visit from the Malvern World Development Group.

In her will, dated April 23, 1619, Lady Hawkins left £800 to buy land, build the school and pay for "the perpetual maintenance of a learned and choice preaching divine, the Master, to keep a free school in Kington, in the County of Hereford".

The school was officially opened with 62 pupils on September 29, 1632.
