THREE-HANDICAPPER James Morgan finished off a marvellous year at Ross-on-Wye by carding a magnificent gross 69 in the Autumn Scratch and Handicap event.

The 24-year-old's three-under-par score included no fewer than five birdies and an eagle to earn him the Scratch Trophy.

Earlier in the year Morgan won the Hospital Cup and Len Weston Trophy with excellent performances and carded the best gross scores in the Centenary Cup and August medal.

He was also a member of the A team which reached the final of the Gloucestershire County Union's President's Cup when Ross were narrowly beaten 3-2 by the Bristol-based Players' Club.

Five pairs contested the final, with Morgan partnering Malcolm Sosna and skipper Jeff Davis partnering Dave Hart to the two Ross victories.

The prestigious tournament featured 43 teams.

n It took a card countback to decide the outcome of the British Legion Cup at Herefordshire GC with Barry Stevenson finishing ahead of David Harrison after both had carded nett 65s.

Veteran Roy Joshua scored a rare ace on the par-four fourth hole - the second time that he has holed his tee-shot on this short but awkward hole.

Roy Withers posted 42 points to win the Frank Cox Trophy, three clear of runner-up John Nichol-son, with Reg Dudman and Clive James taking the minor places on a card countback.

n Wyndham Evans thwarted Joe James, previously twice a runner-up, by a single hole in a closely fought final of the President's Bowl at Kington.

Two up after the morning round, James, was looking for a third-time lucky ending in the premier club knockout but Evans had other ideas. He fought his way back to stand one up on the final hole and, when James found the green with his tee-shot on the short par-four, he calmly chipped and putted for a birdie to snatch the trophy.

Andy Edey left the rest of the field standing when he carded 45 points to win the opening senior accumulator.

The senior team just avoided a whitewash when they visited Summerhill, going down 5-.

n John Potter posted the best score in the October senior medal at Burghill Valley with a nett 66.

n Kingstone High School Society held a popular fourth event of their Autumn season at Brampton with a modified medal in which a player could discard one score and replace it with a par.
