HOLDERS Ewyas Harold are through to the second round of the Hereford Times Herefordshire League Journal Trophy after a 3-1 first round win over Hinton.

The villagers made an ideal start when they bagged the opening goal in the first minute. Simon Macklin flicked on a throw to Matt Pitt who controlled the ball before lashing a shot past goalkeeper Danny Gagg.

But Hinton were quickly back on terms when Ian Morris' 25-yard free-kick beat Stuart Turpin.

Ewyas Harold wasted no time in regaining the lead, however, when Chris Perkins set up Pitt for a tap-in and Tommy Taylor and John Ferneyhough both went close to extending the lead before the break.

The cup holders eventually pulled further ahead when Perkins won a strong challenge in midfield and set up Joe Taylor whose shot found the net through Gagg's legs.

Woofferton, who were beaten by Ewyas Harold at the semi-final stage of last season's competition moved through to the second round with a comfortable 3-0 win at Leominster Town.

Woofferton, who had suffered a 5-4 league defeat at Leominster the previous week, took the first step towards a revenge win when Ben Apperley netted with a fine shot from 25 yards after just eight minutes.

Apperley was then the provider for the second goal, slinging over a cross for Neil Cocum to power a header into the net.

Goalkeeper Dave Cooper prevented Leominster from pulling a goal back with a superb point-blank save from a Jason Evans header before Apperley put the result beyond doubt when he headed home a Tim Moriarty free-kick just before the break.

In the second period, only some good Leominster defending prevented Woofferton's Vern Albert from twice extending the lead.

Wellington Rangers are also in the second round draw after seeing off Sutton United 3-0 away from home.

The visitors took the lead after just three minutes when Chris Aspey sent Danny Hill away on the right and the former Kington player pulled the ball back for Tom McLean to tap home.

McLean was on target again before 10 minutes had elapsed, turning on the edge of the area to drive a low shot into the bottom corner.

On the half-hour a neat one-two between Nick Panniers and Lee Ferneyhough allowed Panniers to blast in the third goal.

With Stuart New sent off on the stroke of half-time, Sutton's prospects of getting back into the game receded still further and it took a couple of good second-half saves from Scott Garrett to prevent McLean from completing his hat-trick.

Pegasus and Kington Town Reserves, who have only accumulated one point between them from eight league matches, were paired in the other first round tie and it was the city club who progressed with a 3-0 win.

Pegasus took the lead with just 10 minutes played and went on to dominate the first period.

Kington's young side rallied a little after the break before Pegasus sealed their win with two goals in the final 20 minutes.
