A Hereford football fanatic is leading a campaign to ensure England supporters are singing even when they are not winning at the new Wembley Stadium.

Stefan Hitchinson, of Lower Bullingham, is sending the Football Association a petition outlining his ideas for a special singing section in the new £757million stadium after leaving the last few international matches disappointed at the lack of a genuine atmosphere.

The England fan club member said: "I went to the Northern Ireland game at Old Trafford and the Irish outsang us even though we outnumbered them by about 60,000 people.

"So I, along with Ian Weemes from the official supporters club, decided to do something so this never happens when England return to Wembley."

Hitchinson said that he hoped a section reserved for fans willing to give their full vocal backing would overcome the current problems.

"At the moment we have pockets of fans spread throughout massive stadiums trying to start songs and get behind the team," he added.

"What we want is our own special area where we can all sing together and help spread the atmosphere throughout the ground - a bit like the Meadow End at Hereford United only bigger."

Although the campaign is at an early stage, a lot of interest has already been shown and Wembley spokesperson Lucy Robinson said that the petition was being discussed.

In an e-mail to Hitchinson, she stated: "We certainly like the idea of having an England fans singing section at the new Wembley Stadium and (together with the FA) we are currently looking into whether this is possible and how it might work in practice."
