Ledbury Rugby Club's new director of rugby, 39-year-old production manager Darrell Williams, says that player apathy is his biggest concern for the forthcoming season.

Williams, a former Ledbury player, who played the bulk of his rugby in South Wales, says he is looking forward to working with head coach Rob Collins and the player's committee to improve the standard of the club's rugby.

The club is also hoping to recruit a specialist forward coach to work on set pieces.

Williams said: "My role is mostly about putting a more formal structure in place and determining what the club's needs are to be more successful on the rugby field."

He said his main aspiration for the coming season was not to struggle.

"We have a great nucleus of players and a fantastic coach in Rob. He has all the experience that we require for a head coach and if we can get the players training and recruit wisely we will not have a problem in the league next season, he said.

Although he does have one major concern and it's something that may be out of his hands.

He said: "It's player apathy, it's as simple as that. We have the facilities, we're profitable and we are able to increase our coaching staff to cater for increased numbers at training.

"Richard Hall has volunteered to help coach the second and third team players and this can only be good for the first team. A first team is only as good as the teams propping it up."

Williams said he is looking forward to the challenge of bringing a greater unity to the players of all teams. I believe that there are no firsts, seconds or thirds but there is a squad of players who want to play for Ledbury and every one will be given a chance."
