A long-standing Ledbury vet will achieve his lifetime ambition during a demanding fundraising trek.

Keen walker Martin Leith has worked at Leadon Vale Veterinary Centre for nearly 25 years and decided to celebrate the landmark by completing Peru's famous Inca Trail.

The ten-day trek will take Mr Leith 4,200 metres up into the Peruvian mountains, culminating in a visit to the sacred Inca city of Machu Picchu.

"I've been at the practice for 25 years in April and thought I'd better do something to mark the event," he said.

"I've always wanted to be a vet and I've always wanted to see Machu Picchu ever since I saw a picture of it, so this was perfect."

Mr Leith, from Ledbury, is currently training for the walk, starting on October 1, and says overcoming his dislike of camping will be the most difficult challenge.

"I absolutely detest camping. The only time I've put up a tent this year is with my children in the garden," he explained.

"Apparently the temperature drops to minus eight at night time, too."

Mr Leith, 47, said working with animals was thoroughly rewarding.

"My time at the centre has been really great so far. I've got so many good memories, too many to report them all."

Mr Leith hopes his trek will raise £3,000 for national charity, the Animal Health Trust and said, although customers and drug companies had been very generous, he would appreciate further donations.

Anyone interested in sponsoring Mr Leith should visit Leadon Vale Veterinary Centre, on Lower Road, or call 01531 632276.
