FOR the last 20 years Iris and Bill Bennett from Pembridge used milestone anniversaries to raise money for good causes.

When Bill died earlier this year, his wife of 52 years decided money donated at his funeral should be used in the same way.

The large congregation at Pembridge Church gave £1,111 and Iris thought the money would be well spent on a heart monitor for the cardiac unit at Hereford County Hospital.

The price was £1,650 and Iris dipped into a £1,000 jackpot win with St Michael's Hospice lottery to make up the difference.

In past years, the couple have helped the Air Ambulance and Kington nurses and supported the MRI scanner at Oswestry Hospital.

Iris said her husband would have been pleased to help the County Hospital in some small way.

At the hospital Denise Thomas, from the cardiac unit, said the heart monitor was already in use.

"We are very grateful Mrs Bennett took the time and trouble to buy a valuable piece of equipment which will be used continuously in the hospital to the benefit of patients,'' she said.
