A YOUNG Herefordshire cricketer has been an integral port of the club side which rules the roost at under-13 level.
Lee Watkins, the son of former Herefordshire all-rounder Steve, played an important role as Newport carried off the MCC Spirit of Cricket under-13 National Club Championship at Oakham School.
Watkins, a first-change seam bowler and number four batsman, was a member of the side which carried all before them in the competition, winning all of their 16 matches.
This involved a qualifying competition of 20-over matches leading up to a week of cricket featuring seven games at Oakham.
And, just to make the week extra special, last Friday, the day when Newport clinched the title by beating Harrow St Mary's was Watkins' 13th birthday.
