THE Learning and Skills Council (local LSC) has launched a search for someone special who wants to make the commitment to shaping the future of learning and training in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

It is looking for a chairman who, it says, is not just knowledgeable about the role of education and training, but passionate about the lifelong role of learning.

Alan Curless, executive director of the local LSC explained: "There's no better time to become an ambassador for the local LSC as the vacancy presents applicants with a real opportunity to make a difference to young people and adults.

"Working closely with schools, colleges, training providers and employers to help raise educational standards and widen learning opportunities, the new chairman will play a particularly key role in rolling out the outcomes of our Strategic Area Review, the most fundamental assessment of learning provision we've ever undertaken."

A genuine desire to contribute to the community isn't the only skill required, a good understanding of local learning and skills issues, plus the strategic vision to add to the planning of education and training provision for the community is essential.

Those interested in applying should also have experience of learning and training, preferably with a business or industry background.

Attendance will be required at monthly evening council meetings, selected daytime workshops and other national LSC events with a total time commitment equivalent to one day per week, for which a small honorarium is paid.
