ST EDWARD'S CHURCH - Father Timothy Williams, assisted by Father John Jenkins, a retired priest from near Aberystwyth, presided at Eucharist for Whitsunday at St Edward's Church. Linda Heakin and Kevin Kell read the lessons and Cecil Rudge was organist. Mr Kell and Peter Waters assisted in the distribution of the communion and Mr Kell also led the prayers. Earlier, members of the congregation joined in a service of Prime at the clock tower as part of Knighton's 2000's medieval weekend. Prime was the first service of the day in the monasteries and was incorporated into morning prayer in the Anglican service book at the Reformation. Knighton's mayor Councillor Trevor Johnson, town crier Councillor Derrick Price, and members of Harlech Re-enactment Society joined in the service, which was followed by a parade through the town, led by the town crier, and the crowning of Owain Glyndwr at Bryn-y-Castell. In the evening, members of St Edward's congregation took part in an open-air united service, organised jointly by Churches Together in Knighton, Presteigne and Districts, on the John Beddoes School playing field. This was part of the Pentecost 200 celebration.

METHODIST CHURCH - Members joined in the recent Pentecost 2000 celebration at John Beddoes School.

ELECTION - Christine Branford won a convincing victory in the recent election for a seat on Knighton Town Council. Mrs Branford is chairman of Knighton Community Centre management committee and a member of the show and carnival committee. The full result was: Christine Branford 128 votes, Fay Exworth-Dent 24, Leslie Griffiths 51, Lorna Higgins 11, Marcia Howard 14 and Iain Morris 23. The seat is on Knighton's central ward and the vacancy was caused by the resignation of Jane Green.

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Mrs M Chapman, Mrs M Cox, Mrs I Leeson and Mrs W Davies were helpers at a recent meeting of the Wednesday Club in the Social Room, St Edward's Close. Marjorie Cox organised a quiz.

CONCERT - The Bethel Wind Ensemble, with woodwind as well as brass instruments, gave an excellent concert at Knighton Community Centre. It was attended by an audience of 80. The programme featured a variety of contrasting works by composers which included Shostakovich, Grainger, Gershwin, Warren Barker, Sousa and Alan Menken. Under guest conductor, Charles B Olson, the musicians of the Ensemble tackled complex pieces with skill and flair. The ensemble is from Bethel College, a four-year Christian liberal arts college in Arden Hill, Minnesota, USA, and has completed a tour of Britain. The event was organised by Knighton and Beguildy group of parishes and proceeds will go towards the work of these churches. The musicians stayed with local families and, on the morning after the concert ,they were given a civic send-off.

COFFEE MORNING - The Amnesty International coffee evening at Rose Hill, Knucklas Road, has been postponed until July 13. There will be coffee, biscuits and a bring-and-buy stall. Admission is £1 and proceeds will go towards the work of Amnesty International.
