COLLECTION Gallery Ledbury, renowned for its wide range of contemporary British crafts, compliments its three-dimensional work this month, with a show of prints and etching by Ross-on-Wye artist, Sue Maud.
An experienced sailor, Sue not only does much of the research for her work while at sea, but also uses the sun and sea water for printing while afloat. This exhibition shows work from recent trips and takes its title 'Solo To The Sea' from an image of sailing companion, Andy Howes. Photographing, sketching and painting while among the elements, Sue returns to her studio to continue eroding the etching plates, exploring collage, mixed media and more traditional methods to create pictures which have a personal yet universal quality, combining familiar images with abstract elements.
Sue's goal is to capture the awesome and elusive beauty of the ocean, its moods, its might and its unbounded nature.
She writes: "To sail and experience, at first hand, the sea and the relationship between the sea and the boat, the sky and the sea, objects and the sea, formations and patterns, grandeur and beauty, and then as an artist, to try and involve the viewer in a portrayal of an inner feeling of constant shifting and change, by manipulating image, colour and form, is a challenge in itself."
Sue embraces that challenge and the result is both moving and immensely appealing.
'Solo To The Sea' continues until July 30.
