Colwall suffered the heartbreak of defeat on wickets lost in the national first round of the 6X Village Knockout after the scores were tied at 146 against Derbyshire visitors Elvaston.

The efforts of unbeaten ninth-wicket pair Jordan Kontarines (32 not out) and skipper David Sutton were in vain after they hit only two of three runs required off the final ball of the match.

The county side had been ahead of the run rate after 20 overs, thanks to a solid start from opener Lincoln Marshall (41) and number three James Wagstaff (25).

But spinner Thompson (2-16) claimed the wickets of both to restrict Colwall and they were falling behind at 113-6 with five overs remaining, before Kontarines and Sutton gave them hope.

Previously, Elvaston opener Archer top scored for the visitors with 35, aided by Thompson (29) and Bodill (28), but the visitors crucially lost only seven wickets, one fewer than their hosts.
