DEMOLITION work has started to make way for an innovative housing project which will help young people in Herefordshire.
St John Kemble Hereford Housing Association is converting the former YMCA premises in Whitecross Road into a supported housing scheme for 16-25-year-olds.
The £635,000 contract for the building work has been won by Worcester company Spicers, who have just started on site.
"This is an exciting initiative which will provide accommodation and training for young people from the county - it will give them vital support towards independent living," said Chas Townley, the housing scheme's project manager.
The development will create 12 bedsit flats and a neighbouring house is being demolished to make way for five rented family homes.
"All the young people in the supported scheme will have individual training programmes drawn up for them to give them the skills and qualifications they need for employment and adult life," Chas explained.
The scheme is part of a county-wide supported housing project and will include the housing association building in Leominster and outreach workers to support young people living in surrounding villages and remote rural areas.
