PEOPLE who live near the former SAS camp in Hereford are being invited to have a say about its future.

The former Stirling Lines is up for sale and locals are said to be concerned over what will happen to the 50 acres of land and buildings.

Herefordshire councillor Aubrey Oliver (Lib Dem) has arranged a public meeting for those people who live nearby to express their views.

"If enough people turn up we can gauge pubic opinion and pass it on to the council before any planning decisions are made,'' said Councillor Oliver who lives at the Hoarwithy Road end of the camp.

Those most affected by the change of use should have the chance to 'put their oar in', he said.

"I think people do not want to see wall-to-wall housing without an improved infrastructure.

"They would also like to see more open space and land devoted to the community,'' he added.

The councillor said people in the Putson area had few leisure facilities and would like to see a community centre for their use.

Hereford MP Paul Keetch will attend the meeting and the council's planning chairman Colin Rumsey and other planning officers are expected to be there.

The council has already indicated that it would like to see a mix of housing, light engineering and leisure facilities at the former SAS base.

The meeting on Friday is at 6.30pm at Putson Baptist Church in Web Tree Avenue.
