Hereford'S Whitecross High School is without its head at a critical time of change, writes BILL TANNER.

Governors are appointing a new management team to meet the challenges set by a recent Ofsted report.

But headteacher Alan Hocking has been on sick leave since half-term. His deputy John Murphy is in charge.

Whitecross, which serves north-west Hereford, has been identified by Ofsted as having 'serious weaknesses'. The report said an 'orderly and supportive' community created there was blighted by insufficient progress.

In response, the school acknowledged some 'important areas' required improvement. Staff and governors worked on an action plan and their capacity to effect change was noted by inspectors.

The LEA is also confident. A project to re-locate and enlarge the school is currently on a reserve list for Government funding.

In May, Whitecross moved to 'restructure' its management team. The majority of appointments have been offered and accepted.

John Murphy is to be deputy head (curriculum) with Tim Knapp as his assistant. Newcomer Neil Morris arrives as deputy head (pastoral) assisted by long-serving Di Bridges.

One familiar face is not in place. Chair of governors Rev. Bob King confirmed that headteacher Alan Hocking has been 'off sick' since half- term, with Mr Murphy acting head in the interim.

"John has been doing a good job keeping the school running effectively. We wish Alan a speedy recovery," said Rev. King.
