THEY think it's all over - but it isn't. A Hereford football club that lost its vital 'home' fixture may get a re-match.

Inquiries are underway into the conduct of a county planning process that denied Westfields FC and the city's sixth form college their goal.

Herefordshire Council leader Terry James brands the decision 'disastrous'.

Initial approval of a joint application for playing fields and other facilities off Widemarsh Common should have stood, he says.

Opponents cried 'foul' claiming such development would harm the Common's conservation and heritage value. Council officers agreed that the concept was contrary to policy.

Central area planners supported the scheme but passed a final decision on the county's main planning committee, where it was refused by a 10-7 vote last Friday.

But Councillor James, not a member of either committee, claims that the original approval did not require referral. There are, he says, grounds for concern at the subsequent course of events.

"Inquires into what happened are underway, the decision is disastrous for young sports persons."

l Westfields' chief executive has launched a scathing attack on planners in the wake of the decision.
