MILTON Keynes has its concrete cows and Bromyard could soon be equally famous for life-sized sheep in bronze and even a wild boar, all likely candidates for the town's proposed sculpture trail.

In recent weeks, a comments box in the foyer of the Town Council Offices, off Rowberry Street, has been collecting the views of local people on a host of projects suggested to brighten up the streetscape and bring in more tourists.

Now the contents of the box have been taken away for study, a move that will allow members of the Town Council, Herefordshire Council and town manager Carl Jones to decide which designs should be put where.

Mr Jones said: "We will certainly use the public votes as a strong basis for our final decision."

One contender for the £16,000 sculpture trail is a so-called "Time Tower," which would take the form of a framework structure displaying the varied history of Bromyard.

Aside from the life-sized replicas of sheep and a wild boar, there could be a statue of an Anglo-Saxon man, representing Bromyard's distant past, and an abstract sculpture showing the origins of the town as "a broomy enclosure," the feature that gave Bromyard its name.

The panels' decision is expected soon, but it is certain that there can only be three sculptures in the trail, for reason of costs.

The sites for the sculptures have already been chosen. There will be one at Nunwell park, off the bypass; one in front of the Leisure Centre, in Cruxwell Street, and another by the Council Offices, off Rowberry Street. Meanwhile work on the adjacent Pavilion site 'oasis' at the end of the trail is set to begin in the next few weeks.

The site will be paved and fenced off, and benches will be put there, allowing visitors "a view over the old bowling green," close to the Town Council Offices. Mr Jones said: "It will be an oasis, and area of relaxation and calm, perhaps for those who have visited the public art trail."

The public art trail itself, funded by Bromyard Town Council and European 5b funding, is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
