THE renowned Glasgow Phoenix Choir will be joining forces with the Hereford Police Male Voice Choir to perform in a concert in St Michael and All Angels Church, Ledbury, on Sunday, September 24 at 7pm.

Both choirs received great acclaim when they performed together in Hereford Cathedral last year and more recently in Scotland.

The Glasgow Phoenix Choir rose out of the ashes of the world-famous Glasgow Orpheus Choir when that choir disbanded in 1951 after 50 years of choral excellence. Eighty-three members of the Orpheus who wished to continue as choristers founded the Phoenix and thus continued the excellent traditions for which its predecessor was deservedly known.

Next year the Phoenix will celebrate its own 50th anniversary as it continues to perform arrangements of Scottish songs for which the choir is widely known throughout the British Isles, Europe and North America. However, this is only part of the choir's extensive repertoire which extends from oratoria, opera, chamber music and sacred music from all the major composers through choral part songs and folk music of many cultures to music from the shows including many of the top musicals.

During the forthcoming concert in Ledbury each choir will perform its own programme and then the choirs will join together for a rendition of the exhilarating Rhythm of Life. It promises to be an unforgettable evening with music to suit all tastes.

Tickets priced £7.50 (including wine) can be obtained from Three Counties Bookshop, High Street, Ledbury, telephone: 01531 635699; Ledbury Books and Maps, High Street, Ledbury, telephone: 01531 633226, or Jim Baskerville (choir ticket officer), Hereford, telephone: 01432 269560.
