AN intrepid adventurer is 5,000 miles into forging the longest continuous footpath in human history.

The record-breaking bid by 'Walkman' Karl Bushby is catching world attention, but its base is right here in Herefordshire.

Karl's father Keith, from Hereford, speaks to Bill Tanner of the pride he has in his son, while operations director Pete Hornett outlines the extraordinary odyssey so far.

Karl's travelogue

HE may be walking round the world, but Karl Bushby is always in Herefordshire. The county is home base for his Goliath Earthtrek and Operational Director Pete Hornett summarises the journey to date.

"Karl's diaries clearly illustrate he exists from day-to-day, hand to mouth on an almost non-existent budget. He has had numerous totally unique, humorous, humbling, spiritual, dangerous and at times life-threatening experiences."

Karl, says Pete, utilises the 'traditional international currency' of friendship to sustain his meagre existence.

"It is evident, in these turbulent times, that people and communities, regardless of cultural differences, personal circumstance, and the barrier of unfamiliar language show such overwhelming generosity towards Karl - perhaps there's a message for the world's head's of state, politicians and ambassadors.

Karl's exploits can now be followed in depth on the Goliath, The Expedition web site www.earthtrekuk.net containing all his personal journals and observations.
