FORMER British Olympic athlete Kriss Akabusi MBE took time to praise the talents of young county sportsmen and women when he visited the Leadership Trust in Ross.

Akabusi, who was a guest speaker at the Trust's third annual conference, met a group of five sporting youngsters who have been helped by the Ready Steady Win project.

The project, run by Ross Rotary Club, grants bursaries to promising Herefordshire youngsters who have shown achievement in sport.

Akabusi also spoke to the group about his own athletics achievements and experiences, which led to the award of his MBE in 1992.

The quintet featured Esmie Beardsley, a 16-year-old karate star from Hereford, and Ross tennis player Josh Gilmour, 12, who is among the top 100 in the country in his age group.

Windsurfing brothers Guy and Harry Solven and judo competitor Margaret Williams, from Ross, completed the five.

Former England cricket captain David Gower also filled a guest speaker slot at the conference.
