GERRY Griffiths, a past captain of Kington, was elected to the vice-captaincy of the Society of Shropshire and Herefordshire Golf Club Captains for 2001, at the AGM of the Society, held at Bridgnorth. He will assist Alan Walker (Hawkstone Park) in his year as captain before taking over the reins for 2002.

His club colleague Joe Pattison was the only Herefordshire prize-winner in the Society's Summer meeting when he posted 40 stableford points to claim third place. Bill Hogg (Worfield) fired 42 points to win the competition and the EL Evans Cup, and he was joined by club colleagues Ernie Bailey and Mike Walker in winning the Herefordshire Centenary Team Trophy.

Brockington junior Ben Simpkin posted an excellent 36 hole one-over-par total of 129 to become the new club champion. Chris Hunt took the nett prize with 165-48-117, nine shots clear of Peter Robinson, 166-38-126.

Persistent rain did not dampen the enthusiasm of the Ross-on-Wye members who supported the captain, Bob Cook, on his away day at Bristol and Clifton. Past captains John Gabb and Robert Bodoano led the way in the better-ball stableford competition with 41 points, beating Mike Cooper and Peter Plumb on a countback, with the captain and David Griffiths third on 40 points, and Tom Haskett and Mike Gullis in fourth place a further point adrift.

Herefordshire Golf Club Seniors came unstuck by 6 to 1 at Leominster where the home side exacted full revenge for their earlier 5 to 2 defeat at Wormsley.

Herefordshire enjoyed rather better fortune at Worcester where they won by 4 to 2 .

More than 40 Leominster Seniors members played in the September medal, using the new 6th hole for the first time.

It was a particularly memorable day for Charlie Tune who had to put his hand in his pocket after a hole in one at the 14th.

Tony Bunclarke (68 nett) was the winner in the 0-18 section, followed by Geoff Skelton (69), while Peter Brundrett (68) and Robert Brisland (69) were the first two home in the 19-28 section.

Ross Seniors recorded a rare double when they followed their 5-2 win at Cirencester with a 4-3 success on home territory.

Captain Gwyn Hawker and his partner David Jones had a field day to win 7/6 but Cirencester fought hard to hold Chris Malson and Ron Monk and Peter Woodriffe and Chris Saunders to halves. It was left to Dennis Gilbert and Paul Fernside (3/1) and Louis Whitton and Terry Watts (one up) to see the home side home. The pairings of Neville Ovens and John Telford and John Dinnis and Stan Walker both had tough games before going down 2/1 and 4/2 respectively.
