ST EDWARD'S CHURCH - The Rev. Dennis Parry celebrated Sunday eucharist at St Edward's Church. As it was the first Sunday of the month, the Hopwood musical setting for the eucharist was used. Because the service fell on the 61st anniversary of the declaration of war on Germany on Sunday, September 3, 1939, the hymn 'All people that on earth do dwell' was used as the processional. The Amnesty International candle was lit in the north chapel as a reminder of those who still suffer for their beliefs under oppressive regimes.Sunday is Battle of Britain Sunday and there will be a celebration of the eucharist of 9.15am, with the Rev. Dennis Parry. The Battle of Britain Service, which will be taken by Canon Lionel Marshall, rural dean of Maelienydd, at 11am after the wreath- laying at Knighton's war memorial in Brookside Square. On Saturday, September 23, St Edward's will be holding a music day which will culminate in sung evensong at 4pm. Sunday, September 24, is St Edward's harvest festival, with festal eucharist at 9.15am and harvest evensong in the evening. JOINT SERVICE - Churches Together in Knighton and district held its annual joint communion service at St Andrew's Church, Norton. The location of this service moves round the participating churches and this year was Norton's turn to host the event. The Rev. Donald Green celebrated using the new Church in Wales Rite, as the form of the communion service is the one normally used by the host church. John Wilding (Anglican) read the lesson, George Linaker (Methodist) delivered the sermons and the Rev. Michael Humphreys (Baptist) led the prayers. Thomas Heakin was server and Peter Waters assisted with the distribution of the communion. St Edward's Choir, under the direction of Hilary Howcroft, led the singing. Cecil Rudge was organist.

CHRISTIAN AID - A collection for Christian Aid, made during Christian Aid Week in May and a series of austerity lunches in Lent, raised the magnificent sum of £822.80 which was sent to the charity in full, with no expenses deducted. On behalf of Churches Together in Knighton and district, treasurer Gordon Mann has extended thanks to all who contributed this year, and to helpers and collectors.

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Mrs I Leeson, Mrs M Cox and Mrs W Davies were helpers at the Knighton and District Wednesday Club meeting in the Social Room, St Edward's Close.

EXHIBITION - An exhibition of work by Gordon Yapp will be staged in the Tower House Gallery, High Street, Knighton, during this month. Gordon Yapp is a professional artist who lives locally, and the exhibition will feature his woodcuts, celebrating rural life in the Borders.

SHOW AND CARNIVAL - Stars of Knighton Show and Carnival was the Honda Imps junior motorcycle display team from London, under the direction of Roy Pratt who began the Imps in the 1970s giving youngsters from the East End a sense of achievement. The team consisted of 36 riders between the ages of six and 16, six of whom were girls. The young riders gave an astonishing show, performing a number of tricks, including jumps and the pyramid. A spectacular climax was a jump through fire. The horticultural, floral and handicrafts show in the community centre was a big attraction with many top-class entries. Felindre WI won the much-coveted Tref-y-Clawdd Cup for WIs in the area, and Mr K Meredith took the Margaret Price memorial rosette for best item in the show. The mid-day and evening processions, with the theme of 'Back to the Future', were well supported with Knighton Town Silver Band, the Newtown Youth Marching Corps and the Victorian Street Girls Pipe Band all taking part. Knighton Mayor, Councillor Trevor Johnson, opened the show and thanked everyone involved with the organisation and staging of the event. Carnival Princess Gemma Pritchard was crowned by Richard Thorp, star of ITV's 'Emmerdale'; a balloon ride was won by Les and Maureen Thomas, who travelled as far as Stormer Hall by Leintwardine. The day ended with fireworks and dances in the community centre and Knighton Hotel.
