Luctonians 19 pts

Sutton Coldfield 7

LUCTONIANS notched their first victory of the campaign in Midlands 2 West in front of a large crowd at Mortimer Park.

It took the North Herefordshire side 22 minutes to open the scoring when Will Crawforth, playing on the wing, picked up a dropped pass and sprinted 35 yards to touch down.

Dean Rodwell converted and within two minutes Luctonians went further ahead with a debut try from Phillip Mathews, initiated by a jinking 40-yard run from Crawforth.

Rodwell added the extra two points and, moments before the break, the home lead was extended further when they were rewarded for unrelenting pressure on the visitors' line.

Scrum-half Will Price sneaked through a gap and went in under the posts, but Rodwell missed the conversion and set the tone for a second half littered with missed opportunities.

Sutton Coldfield had the better of the second period as Luctonians failed to win their own throw or hold the ball.

However, the county side put in some excellent defensive work to keep out the visitors until five minutes from time when full-back Craig Atkins grabbed a consolation try in the corner, converted by fly-half Dave Lockley.

l Andy Garrod and Wayne Mills each scored a hat-trick of tries as Luctonians 2nd blitzed their Sutton Coldfield counterparts with a 60-5 home win.

Steve Novak, Sam McGowan, Martin Lewis and Andrew McPhail all touched down, while McGowan also kicked four conversions.

Luctonians 3rd lost 29-0 at home to a Ludlow side that contained seven first team players, while Luctonians Colts had an easier time with a 71-0 demolition of Rendcombe College.

Nick Hamer (3), Christie Rees (2), Peter Reed, Ed Sly, David Wilkinson, Reuben James, Stephen Dale and Mike Davies all went over for the Colts, and Charlie Langford added eight conversions.
