Herefordshire Council has launched a review that will decide the fate of the Open Fields Caravan site at Bringsty, following last autumn's spate of vandal attacks which caused £40,000 worth of damage.

The report from the Travellers Policy Working Group will be out by the summer. Its scope will cover not just Open Fields, but all travellers' sites owned and administered by the council.

Andy Tector, head of environmental health and trading standards, said he "doubted very much" whether all the county's traveller sites would be closed, because people still relied on the sites for housing.

Only two families now live on the Open Fields site, which last autumn was the scene of several car burnings.

Families started to leave the site at the same time, with only a handful of residents choosing to stay.

Nine out of 14 stationary brick dwellings were also wrecked.

At the time, a council spokesman said the site could be "down-sized" to four or six units, more in line with "modern thinking".
