THE chances of a GP surgery being reopened in Tarrington look more remote, writes LIZ WATKINS.

A neighbouring practice has investigated the possibility of opening a branch there but has concluded it is not a viable option.

They say it would be in the best interest of patients to expand and develop services at their Fownhope surgery rather than stretching them to support a branch surgery.

The surgery at Tarrington closed down at the end of last year after 150 years of service in the village.

Patients launched a campaign for a replacement and in the meantime most of the 1,600 patients were registered with the Fownhope practice.

It was this practice which agreed to look into the practicalities of opening a branch at Tarrington.

But Herefordshire Primary Care Trust has been told the practice believes such a move not to be viable.

Herefordshire Health Authority has written to all patients explaining the situation.

The watchdog Herefordshire Community Health Council, which has been involved in negotiations from the start is also undertaking a survey involving patients.

In a questionnaire the Council is asking former Tarrington patients and Fownhope patients their views in light of the change.

Primary Care Trust spokesman Simon Hairsnape said a commitment had been made to the Fownhope surgery to support the development of local services and feedback on the progress would be available in coming months.
