OBJECTIONS to the proposed ASDA store development off the Belmont roundabout have been aired in the newsletter of Hereford Civic Trust, writes LIZ WATKINS.

Member Simon van de Put who attended two presentations by joint developers ASDA and Eign Enterprises claims that almost every aspect of the development received objections from those present.

The £55 million project includes housing, a major store, community facilities and car parking for 500 vehicles.

Mr van de Put said people were concerned about increases in traffic, noise and pollution already at a high level and the proximity of housing to the parking area.

Other major objections were the effect of constant traffic movement on sheltered housing already in the area, the unattractive service area will face one of the most attractive views in the city, there was no guarantee the flood relief scheme will work, the community building should not be in the vicinity and jurisdiction of the store, the store will have a detrimental effect on local traders and the city did not need a supermarket on such a prime site.

In what he describes as a common sense, but unlikely alternative the green space fronting the River Wye should be revitalised, allotments restored, the introduction of seating and walkways, the installation of a bandstand and public debating platform, encourage local trade, give the Greyhound Dog a makeover and reinstall the lantern that graced its front.

They point out these views are not necessarily those of Hereford Civic Trust.
