Hereford'S two city centre post offices could close and a new outlet opened under plans announced this week.

The new post office would be based at 14 and 15 St Peter's Street if Herefordshire Council gives its stamp of approval to the proposal.

Agents Atkins, Walters and Webster, state that the planned PO would replace the existing ones in St Peter's Street and Broad Street, which are considered 'inadequate to both public and staff requirements'.

Don Veale, a spokesman for Consignia Holding Plc, said: "We are looking at our options regarding the branch offices - possibly combining the two.

"However these considerations are at an early stage and in the mean time it's business as usual at both."

The plans for 14 and 15 St Peter's Street involve the alteration of two existing ground floor shop units - currently Clarks shoes and the Shaw Trust charity shop.

John Keery, a spokesman for Clarks, confirmed the shop would be closing down at the end of January.

"We hope the business will transfer to our other shop in the city in Trinity Square, which has recently been refitted," he said.

"The reorganisation of the two shops does fit in with our strategy to offer customers a better service at a more modern shop.

"We are currently in negotiation over jobs - it is likely there will be some transfers."
