A Hereford church's chances of Christmas coming early depend on the powers that be in the county.

The city's Elim Pentecostal congregation hopes to convert the one-time Wiggin Social Club at Holmer into a site suitable for worship. But before work can begin planners have to pass a change of use application - due before their December meeting.

On the move earlier this year, the Elims divided services between venues - having outgrown a home in Clive Street, Bartonsham, they have had since 1954.

A full purchase of the social club site, unused in its earlier capacity for some three years, is likely if a go-ahead to convert is given.

Details to this effect were still subject to negotiation according to Elim Minister the Rev. Philip Thompsett.

The deal did offer 'many possibilities' for church and community commitments.

Once a private house, the social club is a substantial 19th property set in extensive grounds, with a past that will play a part in its future. Heritage issues are sure to arise during debate, just as they did during a conversion application in 1998.

A history of the Elims in Hereford goes back to 1951, the year of a foundation meeting at The Shirehall.

Congregations then gathered at the Co-operative Hall, Bridge Street, until the move to Clive Street.
