BROMYARD'S British number one Janet McMorran brought her international season to a highly satisfactory conclusion when she reached the ladies' doubles semi-finals at the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters in Amersfoort, the Netherlands - the richest and most prestigious tournament on the world tour.

McMorran and her Swiss partner Karin Erath went into the invitational tournament as the seventh and final seeded doubles partnership, but began their challenge well as they overcame the North American pairing of Yuka Chokyyu and Patty Rollison 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 in their opening round robin pool match. The victory was particularly sweet as Chokyu and Rollison had beaten McMorran and American Sharon Clark in the ladies' doubles final at last month's US Open.

However, following a 5-7, 4-6 loss to Jap-an's Chiyoko Ohmae and Mie Yaosa in their second pool match, McMorran and Erath faced a crunch match against second seeded Dutch pair Sonja Peters and Walraven to earn qualification for the semi-finals.

In the event, McMorran and Erath controlled the match from the start and raced into a 5-0 first-set lead before Walraven retired with an injury to leave the passage to the semi-final open.

McMorran and Era-th faced more Dutch opposition in their semi-final in the shape of Betty Klave and Djoke Van Marum. McMorran had beaten Klave in singles and doubles at the previous week's Nottingham Indoor tournament, but the result was different this time as Klave and Van Marum closed out the match 6-2, 6-3.

"Obviously it would have been nice to have won, but we played well," said McMorran, whose 2001 season only began in July as the result of elbow surgery earlier in the year. She has climbed sharply back up the world rankings in the last six weeks after reaching the US Open singles and doubles finals and winning the Czech Indoor and Nottingham Indoor titles. "I have really enjoyed my tennis since coming back and it shows," added McMorran.

"What is most exciting is that I know that there is plenty I can improve upon with my coach Dan Thorpe and I'm really looking forward to playing in Australia."
