HOLDERS, Woofferton are safely through to the semi-finals of the HFL Senior Cup following a comfortable 6-1 home win over Ross United Services on Saturday.

They will be joined by Weston, who had previously beaten Fownhope, and Westfields, who pulled off the surprise of the day by knocking out Ewyas Harold.

The other quarter-final tie will have to be replayed after Wellington and Civil Service ended all square after extra-time.

Ross Services started confidently in their tie at Woofferton, but once the home team had broken the deadlock after 20 minutes the result was never in doubt. The match ended on a sad note, however, when a Ross defender was taken to hospital with a broken leg.

Woofferton took the lead when Danny Crowther surged from midfield to present Adrian Taylor with a chance which he coolly slotted into the corner of the net. Neil Cocum headed home a Steve Wall corner for the second goal before Crowther completed the first-half scoring after his first shot was parried by the keeper.

Robbie Banks produced a cracking drive to finish off a fine movement between Rob Hughes and Cocum to open Wooffer-ton's second-half account.

Dale Withers added a fifth with a cross-shot before Taylor lobbed the visiting keeper to complete a hat-trick. Ross netted their goal from a penalty.

A young Westfields outfit produced a polished performance to beat experienced hosts Ewyas Harold 3-1 at the villagers' ground.

They raced into a 3-0 lead and then defended well as the wounded villagers produced a spirited fight-back.

Skipper Paul Martin, John Williams and Ben Vale all found the back of the net as the visitors surprised Harold with a dominant opening spell. As the home team struck back Steve Berry marshalled his defence well to restrict them to just one goal from Tommy Taylor.

Civil Service goalkeeper Bobby Smith and the crossbar both came to the rescue as Wellington pushed forward in extra-time in search of a winning goal after a tense 90-minutes had ended at 1-1.

The home team dominated the closing stages with Smith making some fine saves before being beaten by a Dave Beaumont effort which struck the woodwork with the follow-up shot being scrambled away by Adie Wigmore to secure a replay.

Both teams probed away in midfield for the opening half-hour before the game sprung to life when Civil Servants opened the scoring in the 38th minute with an individual goal from Neil Bloomfield. Three minutes later Andy Sherlock equalised from a rebound after his first effort was superbly beaten out by Smith.

The second period was a tense affair with the game flowing from end to end but appeared to be swinging towards the home team as the visitors lost the services of the influential pair of Luke Gosling and Sean McManus due to injury.
