Wellington 1 Smethwick Rangers 0
WELLINGTON were denied what most considered to be a fine goal in the opening minutes of their West Midlands League Premier Division match but came back to claim a deserved victory.
A build-up between Michael Prince, John Kelly and Brad Pearson released Pete Wallace whose neat inside pass was met by Damien Gallimore. His rocket shot rebounded from a net stanchion and although the linesman confirmed the strike, the referee disallowed the goal, convinced that it had struck a post.
The decisive goal came in the first minute after the break when a Willie Lindesay challenge on the edge of the Smethwick box saw the ball loop to Wallace who fired home a fierce volley.
Further Wellington pressure did not yield any more goals, and at the other end any attempts by Smethwick to get back on terms were competently dealt with by a well-organised home defence in which Matthew Joinson and Kelly were outstanding.
