TWO Herefordshire athletes clinched gold medals at the British Indoor Rowing Championships in Birmingham.

Julia Gilbert, who lives in Bromyard, retained the women's junior 15 title, finishing 11 seconds ahead of the world champion in a time of 7 mins 31 secs.

Gilbert has represented England in the Home International Regatta and competed at Women's Henley in the Worcester's King's School first eight, where she is a pupil.

Rob Francis, of Hereford Rowing Club, secured a gold medal in the men's junior under-15 event in a time of 6 mins 46 secs. Francis is a double national champion on water and, like Gilbert, has been selected to attend trials for the Great Britain team.

Serena Crump, another Hereford member, finished third in the women's 35-39 years age group in a time of 7 mins 19 secs, while her double sculls partner, Helen Phillips, came fifth at the same event in 7 mins 36 secs.
