A Hereford painter and decorator, who has won an international photography competition, believes his amazing success is as much down to his family's patience as his skill as a snapper.

Peter Goode, of Green Street, won £3,500 worth of camera equipment and a holiday in a Practical Photography magazine competition for his moody evening view of the Lowry Gallery in Salford.

"I set up my tripod at 6pm and was there for two hours doing long exposure shots.

"The whole time my wife and son sat around in the freezing cold saying 'how much longer? How much longer?'"

"I think I'll have to let them decide where we go for our holiday," he said.

As Vice President of Herefordshire Photographic Society, Peter is no stranger to competition, but said he was pleasantly surprised by his victory over a field of thousands of other photographers.

The Practical Photography judges were not so modest. They said his Lowry picture is: "A superb shot full of atmosphere and colour and pin sharp."
