Hereford Sixth Form College has received recognition for outstanding performance with government funding for a major new development to be undertaken this year.

College Principal Jonathan Godfrey announced the £500,000 cash boost for a new teaching block, enlarged library and I. T. centre at the annual presentation evening attended by guest of honour Liz Griffin, editor of The Hereford Times.

He said: "The government will be providing roughly one third of the total cost of £1.5 million in recognition of the overall excellent performance of the college."

Building work, planned to start later this month, will improve facilities at the college and increase student capacity in line with, or exceeding, the projected 10 percent growth over the next three years.

With performance levels at the college challenging many schools in the private sector Dr Godfrey went on to give credit to the hard work and dedication of both students and staff.

"I am proud that the outstanding results of the college are gained by students of all abilities. The high quality of state education in Herefordshire from 5 to 19 is a tribute to all teachers who work for the education authority and the colleges. This provision is free and open to all pupils regardless of background."

Support from local businesses including Sun Valley Foods, Lloyds TSB and the Hereford Times was also highlighted as a factor in the success of the college.

Chair of Governors Rob Soutar thanked The Hereford Times for its support and, following a speech by editor Mrs Griffin, said: "Thank you for a most entertaining and inspiring speech on the role of the local paper in the community. I hope ex-students will continue to read The Hereford Times to keep in touch with the college and city."
