VIC Baggott had a reasonable excuse for the moderate shot that signified his drive in to office as captain of Kington Golf Club - a broken arm!

Two weeks after suffering the injury when a ladder slipped as he was pruning an apple tree, the redoubtable Baggott defied pain and earned generous applause as he followed Mike Clegg's drive out of office with his first blow as captain.

The ladies also welcomed Sylvia Lloyd as their leader for 2002 when she took over from retiring captain Sue Powell.

The traditional ceremony was preceded by a medal competition, restricted to eight holes because the top of the course was still frozen.

n Burghill Valley regained the Tourists' Trophy with a 7-2 victory over visiting Leominster Rankin Club Society.

The match is played annually between the clubs' two touring teams and took the form of a four-ball better-ball stableford.

The best-scoring pair were Rankin Club's Brian Faulkner and Wilf Arrowsmith with 44 points, while Burghill's Andy Cameron and Mark Herbert were runners-up with 43, beating Derrick Jones and Ed Jones (Rankin) on a countback.
