BOWLS -- Two friendly indoor bowls matches at St. Weonards village hall saw the Sellack club entertain firstly the Bulmers players and then those from the Richmond club. Bringing their league programme to the half way stage shortly before Christmas the Sellack bowls club travelled to Aston Ingham and came away with a 2-8 victory. It was a day to remember for 10-year-old Josh Harrington who had only taken up the sport a few weeks earlier and had played just one half of a friendly game prior to being called upon to participate in the Sellack league team at Aston Ingham. His accurate lead bowling on his grandparents' side (John & Jean Moriss) helped secure victory and also the eight points netted kept the Sellack teamsters in touch with Ross 'B' the division two leaders. Teenager Gareth Barnfield bowled gallantly in his singles game to win handsomely and keep the Sellack clubs chances alive of qualifying for the second round of the L.E.H. Two Counties Trophy. The second leg game was at Sellack's home venue against Gloucester bowls club Quedgeley and after the first game just one shot separated the two sides. As the match neared its climax it could be seen that the number of shots that had been scored by both clubs over the two games was very close but it was the Quedgeley club who emerged as the victors winning as they did overall by three shots 74--71. The Sellack club did extremely well in the Herefordshire rounds of the national competitions. Mother & son Gladys and Ivor Skyrme teamed up with Madley club player David Lane to play the triples competition and, after winning their round-robin section, went on to gain victories in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. The larger majority of the county/national bowls matches were played at the excellent Hartpury College venue but some of the latter stages of the triples & fours disciplines were held over to be played at a new set-up for the County Bowls Association - Bishopswood village hall. The Ross Larraperz triples team had also won their way through to the final to play against the Sellack & Madley trio but, on very new and slick playing surfaces, both teams found consistent accurate bowling hard to achieve and the game never really lived up to the pre-match expectations. It was, however, the two Skyrmes and Lane who tended to achieve the better of the heads more consistently and by the mid way stage had gone several shots in front and went on to win quite convincingly. They now qualify with the runners-up to play at the national finals in April at the vast Kettering leisure centre. Fifteen-year-old Nigel Skyrme will also be making the trip after winning his way to the singles final which last season he won but this time came runners-up to Fownhope's Fred Jolley. Nigel and 10-year-old brother David Skyrme did, in fact, win their way to the semi-finals of the doubles competition but then were beaten by Woolhope. The fours competition was won by Ross Bowls club who beat Fownhope in the final.
