MADAM, Like many older local music lovers I am very interested in the proposal to erect a statue of the late Sir Edward Elgar in Hereford.
I sang under his conductorship many times beginning with the Three Choirs Festival Chorus at Worcester in 1920 and including the last time he conducted 'The Dream of Gerontius', which was in Hereford Cathedral in 1933 a few months before his death.
I well recall that at the conclusion of the performance of the latter he was so overcome by the beauty of the music that the tears streamed down his face while he shook hands with the soloists.
I suggest that if the proposal is carried into effect, all those Herefordians who sang under his banner should receive an open invitation to attend the unveiling of the statue.
May I also suggest that the most appropriate situation for the statue would be in the Cathedral Close at the west end of the cathedral?
