SUPPORTERS of Churchill House Museum turned to picket power in a colourful last stand protest on the steps of Hereford Shirehall.
Councillors arriving for Friday's meeting of Herefordshire Council were left in no doubt about whether the heritage centre, housing a nationally envied costume collection and the Brian Hatton Gallery, will be given up without a fight.
"We think if the council closes Churchill House history will decide that those who opened it were far wiser than the people who closed it," said Keith James of the Save Churchill House steering committee.
However the protestors face an uphill battle convincing a council short of cash that a paltry 1,500 annual visitors to the jewel astride Aylestone Hill are justification for its continued existence.
But cabinet member for social development, Councillor Mike Kimbery, assured supporters the council was open to any proposal that could return the museum to viability.
