THE outcome of the Three Counties Indoor Bowling Festival Cup held at Wormelow was in doubt until the completion of the final series of matches with Worcestershire eventually claiming victory.
Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire have competed annually in this series since 1964, with the event taking place at a venue in the county of the president of the three counties, which this year was Herefordshire's Eric Jones.
Each county was represented by six rinks of four bowlers, with two rinks from each county taking part in a series of three round robin matches, and with each win worth two points, a total of 18 points was available.
Worcestershire eventually won the Cup with eight points, Gloucestershire came second with six points and Herefordshire, in spite of posting the most shots, finished third with four points.
However if the Herefordshire rink of Barry Payne had won their last match of the final series 23-22 instead of losing by the same margin Herefordshire would have taken the trophy on a countback. All three teams would have finished on six points but Herefordshire would have claimed victory with the best total of shots in the whole series.
