PERSEVERANCE has finally paid off for Ellesmere College in the Herefordshire Schools Invitation Sevens at Kingsland on Saturday.

The Shropshire college, who have been attending the tournament since its inaugural event in 1959, came up with their first victory in the under-18 final with a crushing 49-0 success over Llanhari School.

Ellesmere came through to the final with a 19-5 success against Hawthorn of Pontypridd while Llanhari, from Pontyclun, went to a sudden-death semi-final play-off with Llandovery College before making their way through.

In the under-16 final, Gwyr, from Gowerton, beat Dwyr-y Felin from Neath 14-10.

New College of Cardiff were the winners of the under-14 competition with a 17-7 success against Colston's School of Bristol in the final.

The under-14 section featured the best performance of the day by a Herefordshire school, with the Bishop of Hereford's Bluecoat making their way to the semi-final stage before bowing out 41-10 to the eventual winners.
