A HEREFORDSHIRE mechanic has utilised a newly acquired skill to keep a century old car on the move during one of the UK's best-known vintage vehicle rallies.

Richard Naughton is training for his NVQ Level three in Motor Vehicle Engineering at Herefordshire College of Technology while working in the family business at Garth Garage in Knighton.

Richard recently provided mechanical back up for a 1903 Lanchester - one of only four in existence - which successfully completed the London to Brighton rally.

He is also working on a variety of vintage projects including a 1929 Invicta three litre mark three which he intends to fully restore to its former glory.

The course is designed for apprentices' aged between 16 and 24 who wish to study for an NVQ while earning a wage at the same time.

The training division at the college offers modern apprenticeships in a wide range of subjects including accountancy, business administration, construction trades, customer service and hairdressing.

Anyone who is interested in modern apprenticeships from school leaver to individuals wishing to retrain can contact the training division on 0800 019 0066.
