JOHN Middleton had his eye on a pretty girl he had seen around the town.
He finally plucked up courage to speak to her as she was walking with her sister.
That was back in the 1930s. Bodenham couple John and Mary Middleton, now both 82, were married at their home town of Shrewsbury in 1942.
They have just celebrated reaching the milestone of being together for 60 years.
Their son Barry, from Symonds Yat and daughter Judith, from The Vauld, threw a party for them at Marden Village Hall.
The diamond pair, who have four grandchildren and a great grandchild, were joined by a host of family members and friends.
John, a retired engineer, said "trust, love and tolerance" were vital ingredients for a long and happy marriage.
Shared interest in the outdoor life - gardening, walking and camping - has been an important element of John and Mary's life together.
