Wellington 1

Heath Hayes 0

MIDFIELDER Steve Griffiths chose an opportune time to score his first West Midlands League Premier Division goal for the club when his superb half-volley from the edge of the box secured the winning points.

Gale force winds buffeted Wellington's pitch and both teams struggled to control the ball and put together any sustained passages of play.

After 20 minutes a long throw from Tom Herbert was flicked into the box by Pete Wallace, and when a defender could only partially clear, Griffiths found the roof of the net with a blistering half volley.

Heath Hayes stepped up their game after the break, but although they had a lot of possession they did not get a clear shot on goal, thanks to a well organised home defence in which defenders Matt Joinson and Liam Craig and midfielder Andy Price were outstanding.

q Wellington Youth team advanced into the semi-finals of the Giantkillers Youth Cup with a fine 3-2 win over visiting Kidderminster Harriers.

Danny Stevens gave Wellington the lead, but within minutes the visitors hit back to level.

Goals from Andy Sherlock and Sam Lloyd opened up a two-goal home advantage and Wellington defended well against a late rally by the visitors to restrict them to a late goal.
