MARK Owen continued his dominance in Herefordshire Table Tennis Championships when he captured the men's singles title for the 20th time at the senior finals night.

He defeated his old adversary Michael Owens by 8, 13 and 13 in the final in front of a large crowd at Whitecross School on Friday.

Owen had beaten Alistair Dawson 13 and 15 in the semi-finals, while Owens accounted for Lincoln Franklin 18 and 14.

Franklin gained some consolation by partnering Nigel Foreshew to the doubles championship, beating Owen and Nick Wilson 17 and 14 in the final.

The women's champion was Sharon Powell who had a tough match before beating under-14 player Jessica Davies by 17, -18 and 7. By the time they had reached the final Powell had played three matches and Davies, two.

Powell, in fact, claimed three titles. She teamed up with her sister, Lin Ashman, to claim the women's doubles title with a -18, 14 and 17 win over the mother-and-daughter pairing of Sue and Nikki Segust.

Her treble was completed by a mixed doubles success with Andy Castle as they beat Owen and Ashman -18, 14 and 17 in the final.

The veterans' singles was won by Gordon Stables, who beat Dave Hamer 16 and 17, and Stables also partnered Harry Jutle to a 14, -16 and 22 success over Dave R Hamer and Chris Harrison in the veterans doubles final.

The junior boys' title went to Alistair Dawson, who beat Joe Davies 10, 9 and 7, while Lauren James beat Jessica Davies 6, 2 and 6 in the junior girls' final. The pair met again in the Under-14 singles which James won -5, 4, -8, 7 and 2 in a more closely-fought final.

Lauren James also won the Under-12 singles, beating Josh Price 15, 5 and 5.

In the Second Division competition Abouzar Vardinejad beat Sharon Powell 19 and 16.

Trophies were also presented for junior and veteran events which had been completed previously.
