FANFARE and £500 was a good opening in the campaign to honour Sir Edward Elgar's associations with Hereford with a statue of the brilliant composer.

Proposals by four artists for the design of the statue will be available for public viewing in All Saints Church, Hereford, between April 11 and 17.

The public will be given the opportunity to comment on the submissions before a decision is taken by the Elgar in Hereford group.

Four of the county's most promising trumpeters, all pupils of John Pooley, provided the fanfare and other arrangements of Elgar works at the statue fund launch at Hereford's Courtyard last Saturday.

Emily Dodsworth of Bishops of Hereford Bluecoat School, Jack Gibbons of St Mary's, Lugwardine, Tobias Mortimer Price of Weobley High School and Richard Stone of the Sixth Form College, Hereford entertained 60 guests.

Hereford's MP Paul Keetch accepted the first cheque of £500 towards the fund, donated by accountancy firm Kidsons.

Further donations can be made to the Elgar in hereford Group c/o Baker Tilley Chartered Accountants, Elgar House, Holmer Road, Hereford HR4 9SF.
